Add and Remove! Charcoal Drawing
Charcoal is a versatile material. It can be delicate or dramatic, soft or bold, build up marks and tone, painted on, wiped and then added back. So much an apparently simple material can do. The day will explore objects and the human clothed figure using a model and still life set up in the studio.
It is hands on task based coaching, and will work through enjoyable tasks for you to explore soft pastels, charcoal powder, liquid and sticks. As with the other courses the student learns through doing, supported by coaching.
It is a chance to explore this part of your practice, experiment and discover.

What participants say
-
“I have gained a great deal from the course. How to set up your studio, layout your palette, clean your brushes. But mostly I learnt about oil paints, and the many ways in which you can manipulate the medium to achieve the effects you want in your painting. I would highly recommend this course (and have already done so) for anyone wishing to get started in oil painting. I have learnt many valuable lessons which I hope will assist me in my future paintings. It was a pleasure to meet Alan and learn from him.” RobertSee and Paint!
-
“All perfect. I was pleasantly tired at the end of the day. Lots of opportunities to ask questions and provide reflections. Small group size allowed us all to get to know each other.” LynneLook and See!

“Alan was very encouraging and skilled at getting me to look at composition in a less formal and prescriptive way. He is a very good teacher with a lot of tools in his box to pass on to his students. The pace wasnβt too fast and his tips and instruction on how to approach the different techniques was clear and concise.” KarenLook and See!

FAQs
Do I need any experience?
These courses are for adult makers at different stages of their practice — those starting out, people who are looking for a way back in, and practiced makers looking to work through a process and consider new approaches. Your interest and curiosity to take part is what matters, not where you’re starting from.
What materials do I need?
A material list is set for each course. These are normal sketching or painting kit that a beginner or more experienced drawer or painter is likely to have or need for their own use. Additional materials will be provided in combination with what you bring. If you need to add to yours, as a course delegate you will be entitled to a 10% discount on all non-discounted items at the Millers Art Store, 28 Stockwell Street, Glasgow, G1 4RT. Full-time university or college students can get up to 20% off with valid student ID.
What are the group sizes?
Places are limited on purpose. It’s small enough that there’s room for individual attention and the space to comfortably work. For drawing this can be 6-8, for painting this will be smaller.
How do I pay?
Payment can be made securely by a range of payment methods; Credit/Debit Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna Instalments. These are processed by Stripe payment services. The transaction on your card or bank statement will show Teal Creatives Limited, the legal entity of Alan Brash Art. No payment method details are shared with us by Stripe.
Cancellations made 21 days or more before the course receive a full refund; after that, refunds are not available. You can transfer your place to someone else free of charge, or move to another date where a place is available. Full details are in our Cancellation Policy.
